Introduction (Plus This Week's Events!)

Hello there!

You can call me Penelope. I have a passion for music, theater, and all things artistic!

While "Art Collective" will cover artistic news in the local area of Burlington, VT, I plan to broaden our scope by discussing art on the national-to-worldwide level--specifically when it comes to music. (Although, do not be surprised if I post about the occasional local event!) While I will listen to just about any genre, I particularly enjoy Indie and Alternative Rock. I also enjoy keeping myself updated on what songs are at the top on the charts.

Therefore, my posts will mostly consist of album and artist/band reviews and recommendations, as well as general topics about art from around the globe to our own backyard!

I thought it might be nice to kick off my first post with a little "local love", so let's go over some events happening in Burlington this week.

On Friday September 7, "The First Friday Art Walk" is occurring between 5-8 PM. According to the event's facebook page:
First Friday Art Walk is a community event that takes place the first Friday of each month throughout the city of Burlington. The event is free and open to anyone. Between thirty and forty art venues are open between 5PM and 8PM for the Art Walk. Some venues have openings, talks, music, or other special activities.
The lineup of artists and topics being covered sound particularly interesting, with mediums ranging from photography, traditional art, live music, and more! Be sure to check it out. (Click here for more information.)

Also on Friday is Hopapalooza! This musical event is sponsored by Burlington College and features the following performances between 7-10 PM:
The event is free, but a $10 donation is appreciated. It benefits Big Heavy World and the South End Arts & Business Association. The venue is located at the SEABA tent (behind the Maltex Building) on Pine Street. (Click here for more information.)

Finally, there is a fascinating exhibition occurring at the Living/Learning Center entitled "Dazzle Camouflage" by the textile artist Wylie Garcia.

The exhibition runs from September 3-28 (from 1-8:30 PM on Monday-Friday and 12:30-4:30 PM on Saturday) with an opening reception by the artist herself on Thursday at 5:30 PM. (Click here for more information.)

Wylie Garcia describes "Dazzle Camouflage" as a project that "explores holographic cloaking devices by using overlapping geometric layers of hand-felted wool. These designs are intended to be visually striking while acting as a metaphor for obscuring the veneer, depth, and surface of the female form". (Source)

For more information on Wylie Garcia and to view images of her work, I recommend checking out her website.

I hope you enjoyed this little intro and attend this week's events!

Until next time!

- Penelope C.

  1. The Hopapalooza is great, but don't forget the South End Art Hop itself! It's always a good time, and there's lots to see and do (and eat).
