Street Art Profile: ROA

Some of the most prevalent art of our time can be found in the alleyways, building edifices and parks around the world.  The movement of street art is the art of our generation.   Street Art is a movement that has brought the basic techniques of graffiti and combined them with the idea that art has a need to be in the public eye.  One of the most prominent artists of the street art movement is based out of Belgium and goes by the name ROA.  Using most often abandoned industrial buildings as canvas, ROA creates large scale, black and white, animal murals.  On occasion these pieces border on macabre but it does not revoke their hauntingly beautiful essence.

  1. What do you make of the new (i.e., newly completed) mural off of Church Street? It's no Banksy or ROA (or even El Barto), but...?

  2. An El Barto reference? Respect.

The increasing relevancy of street art in popular culture at the moment is astounding. I, for one, think the movement into the realm of acceptability is one that should be embraced. I can trace my own humble beginnings as an artist to the empty streets and abandoned warehouses in and around Hartford CT. Without these late night trips I would have never found the creative outlets that led me to study english and art in college. I hope this isn't the only post you'll be making on the subject of street art. Keep them coming! And to all you young and aspiring artists out there, keep your nips clean, your lines sharp, and your kicks laced tight. An artist that can't outrun the 5-0 isn't much of an artist at all.

  3. I absolutely adore the new Church street mural for a couple of reasons. I think public art is a great thing to be promoted especially in more urban areas. The colors that are used in the mural are brilliant, it really draws the attention of passers-by. And lastly the message itself is a resonating one.
